Secondary Assessment/Survey
Conducted When Casualty is Breathing
The secondary assessment also known as the top to toe survey is used to establish injuries to the unconscious casualty.
Remember to consider :
History – Signs – Symptoms
Hidden injuries must always be found, a casualty could be losing lots of blood from a hidden Injury. Information can also be passed onto the emergency services with further treatment given to the casualty on their arrival.

Always consider how the injury or illness has occurred, gather as much information as you can, many cause of illness are reversible, for example hypoglycemia can be reversed by gives the casualty a sugar gel.
Remember your first aid kit
Before touching the casualty, the first aid kit should be on the scene. Firstly, gloves should be worn to protect and prevent infection or cross-contamination if bodily fluids come into contact with your skin as soon as possible with warm, soapy water.
Secondly, if you come across any injuries, you can treat them.
The first aid kit should be no more than 30 seconds away from your workplace. As part of the risk assessment, it should be easily reached in outside areas.
The Bum Bag First Aid kit is always a good idea when outdoors.
