Slips, trips, and falls
Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls: Control Measures & Tips

Slips, trips, and falls are often caused by wet or uneven floors, poor lighting, clutter, or inappropriate footwear. To prevent them, maintain clear and dry walkways, ensure good lighting, clean up spills immediately, wear appropriate slip-resistant shoes, and secure or cover cables. Regular housekeeping, proper maintenance of flooring, and adequate training for employees also significantly reduce risks.

Common Causes
  • Environmental Factors:
Wet or contaminated floors from spills, dust, or soap; uneven or damaged flooring; and icy outdoor conditions can all lead to slips.

  • Poor Housekeeping:
Clutter, obstructions in walkways, trailing cables, and open drawers or cabinets create tripping hazards.

  • Inadequate Lighting:
Poor visibility in work areas makes it difficult to see and avoid obstacles or hazardous surfaces.

  • Inappropriate Footwear:
Wearing shoes with poor grip or soles unsuitable for the walking surface increases the risk of slips.

  • Lack of Awareness:
Not paying attention to your surroundings, rushing, or walking on unfamiliar or potentially hazardous surfaces can contribute to accidents.

Preventive Measures
  • Maintain Clear Walkways:
Keep floors, stairs, and other walkways clear of clutter, equipment, and debris.

  • Clean Spills Promptly:
Immediately clean up any liquid spills or dust from floors to prevent slips.

  • Ensure Good Lighting:
Make sure all work areas are adequately lit to allow for proper visibility of potential hazards.

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear:
Choose shoes with good support and slip-resistant soles, especially in environments prone to wet or uneven surfaces.

  • Address Flooring Issues:
Repair or replace damaged, loose, or worn flooring and ensure appropriate anti-slip surfaces are used in wet areas.

  • Manage Cables:
Secure or cover electrical cords and cables to keep them out of walkways.

  • Use Warning Signs:
Place warning signs for wet floors or other hazards to alert people to potential dangers.

  • Promote Safe Walking:
Advise individuals to take their time, adjust their stride to the surface, walk in designated paths, and stay alert to their surroundings.

  • Conduct Regular Inspections:
Regularly inspect work areas for potential slip, trip, and fall hazards and implement necessary corrective action
